As people of faith, we know our lives should reflect virtues like love, integrity, and service. Indeed, some of us get so tired of being reminded of that we really want to just roll our eyes and get on with life. Love, integrity, and service aren’t free. There is weariness in the selfless nature of these things. And we must remind ourselves that isolation increases the difficulty of the faith-based life.
We thrive most when surrounded by positive people (and influences) who uplift our spirits and inspire us to grow. With supportive community, the light within us shines brighter.
The Bible stresses the power of company, teaching “Bad company ruins good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33). If we associate too closely with those who revel in negativity, cynicism or greed, it dampens our own spirit. But the reverse also holds true – keeping company with the humble, gracious and faithful can elevate our spirits. Their light becomes our light.
Seeking friendships with those who share our values provides for an easier journey and a mutual encouragement. We need fellow travelers whose kindness and wisdom help us through trials and doubts. In positive and encouraging community, we give and receive care in equal measure. Together, with hearts focused upon strengthening one another, we reflect God’s love.
Surrounding ourselves with role models who walk their talk also pushes us forward. Their passion inspires ours. Their discipline drives our own. Their patience and generosity compel us to live the Gospel more fully. Faith is fortified when nourished in spiritual community.
Of course, we can still radiate light in negative settings. But we flourish most alongside other open hearts and minds. When fellowship is infused with compassion and grace, our spirits soar.
So choose friends and surroundings carefully. Seek kindred spirits who reflect what is highest in you back to yourself. And choose to love those people; choose to invest in their success and flourishing. Where faithful hearts join in aspiration and fellowship, there the light of faith grows bright.
