Who among us does not yearn for instant healing—whether in our bodies, our marriages, or our families? Who willingly embraces suffering, uncertainty, and fear when the prospect of an immediate transformation beckons? I venture to say the answer to the first question is unequivocally ‘everyone,’ and to the second, ‘no one!’
In the Bible we read these great stories of the miraculous. The woman with the issue of blood was instantly healed when she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. The man with palsy was instantly healed after his friends lowered him from the ceiling to Jesus. The blind man was instantly healed of his blindness and famously said, “I once was blind but now I see!” Even the woman at the well had her confidence restored after just one encounter with Jesus.
These stories are meant to build our faith, but sometimes we misunderstand them and begin to desire something that isn’t real. There is no such thing as instantaneous healing of a “perceived” wound. If we receive instantaneous healing of any wound of the body, soul, or spirit then we would never recognize that we were wounded and in need of healing. All perceived wounds will take time to receive healing.
The woman with the issue of blood suffered with her wound for 12 years. The blind man had been born blind and was an adult when he received his sight. The man with palsy had been suffering with the disease long before Jesus healed him, and the woman at the well had been living with her damaged reputation for years before Jesus restored her.
Yes they each received a sudden and complete restoration that was miraculous and powerful, but it wasn’t instantaneous. Each of them had to walk in uncertainty and fear for a long time before their healing and restoration was complete. Each of them had to wait for Jesus!
Jesus didn’t rush to them, but He made sure He got to them. He was always going to heal them. He was always going to make sure He got to them and restored them, but He did it in His timing. Until His timing was complete, God’s grace had to be enough!
We all have heard and believe that God’s grace is enough, but fear and uncertainty have a way of causing us to doubt that truth. Hold fast to it! Jesus is coming, and when He comes, He has every intention of healing your body, soul, and spirit. Trust Him! It might be the hardest thing you have ever done, but it will be the best thing you’ll ever do! Jesus is coming but until He comes, hold tight to this truth, “God’s grace is sufficient.”
