Who isn’t inspired by the scripture about “faith the size of a mustard seed” moving mountains? It’s so often quoted and celebrated for it’s ability to lift the heart of a person and give them hope in their future!
Something that is not as celebrated is the context of that scripture. You can find an account of this scripture in Luke 17:6. Jesus is responding to the disciples asking for increased faith. Why were they asking for increased faith? The previous verses, Luke 17:1-5, are about being a stumbling block and not forgiving those that have sinned and repented! Jesus tells them that if a man sins seven times a day and comes to them repenting seven times then they need to forgive him each time, at which point the disciples are overwhelmed and ask for increased faith.
Forgiveness is hard. Sometimes really hard! Indeed, it can feel impossible. All of us need to repent for the wrongs we have done and sometimes that repentance includes repenting to a person you have wronged. In many ways it’s easy for us to repent and expect or hope for grace because we want to be judged by our intentions not our actions. (We are notorious for justifying our own actions.) But it is often difficult to continue to forgive those who continually sin against us. Therefore when someone tells us we need to overcome our unforgiving desire and forgive again and again and again, the difficulty is overwhelming. We have to turn to God and ask for Him to increase our faith. To which God responds, if you had faith the size of a mustard seed….
Forgiveness isn’t natural to us, but it’s natural to faith. It’s one of the chief cornerstones of faith. We wouldn’t have faith today if it had not been for forgiveness. That’s why it only takes a mustard seed of faith to find the strength to forgive. Just a little faith is all you need, just a small tiny mustard seed sized faith. That knowledge should encourage us because while it may seem impossible to forgive, it doesn’t feel impossible to have a mustard seed of faith!
