Our world is chock full of awkward and sometimes terrible things: Violence, abuse, injustice, brutality, conflicts, suicide, and terrorism.
Should we discuss troubling subjects with our kids? Here are seven guidelines for these conversations:
1. Keep it age-appropriate. (Don’t insist on discussing things they aren’t asking about.)
2. Create a safe space. (Let them know you will talk about anything troubling them.)
3. Be honest and accurate. (Don’t pretend to know everything.)
4. Provide reassurance and context. (They are safe with you.)
5. Focus on resilience and coping strategies. (Teach them to focus on what they can control)
6. Monitor media exposure. (Turn it off, for the love of God!)
7. Encourage critical thinking. (Teach them to think, don’t just tell them what to think)
We empower our children to navigate the world’s complexities by being unafraid of these discussions.
